No ‘Roids In Golf
September 20, 2007Reuters-
Golf finally joined other major sports Thursday when its leading organizations announced an anti-doping policy that will begin in 2008.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, who also serves as chairman of the World Golf Foundation, said the policy includes a list of banned substances, and methods for each golf organization to carry them out.
The list of banned substances includes anabolic agents, hormones, stimulants, narcotics, beta blockers and masking agents. Golf did not adopt the World Anti-Doping Association list because Finchem said it would cause an additional administrative burden and “we do not consider the substances in any way impactful as a performance enhancement.”
The organizations behind the drug policy are the PGA Tour, European Tour, U.S. Golf Association, Royal & Ancient Golf Club, Augusta National Golf Club, PGA of America and the LPGA Tour.
Finchem said the policy would be coordinated around the world, and that if a player is disciplined for violating the policy, such as suspension, that would be recognized by tours wherever he plays.
The LPGA Tour announced last November that it would begin testing next year, then it spent the next 12 months formulating a list of banned substances, testing protocol and punishment for any positive tests.
Finchem and others have said there is no evidence of golfers taking performance-enhancing drugs, although golf leaders have come under increasing pressure to develop a policy.
“I’ve said many times, the R&A has no reason to believe that golf is anything but a clean sport,” R&A chief executive Peter Dawson said. “But we’ve been supportive of coordinating an international effort in golf to test for drugs so we can demonstrate our sport is clean and we can keep it that way.”
Tiger Wins His 7th Tournament
September 16, 2007ATLANTA, Sept 16 (Reuters) – Tiger Woods birdied three of the last six holes to clinch a commanding eight-shot victory at the Tour Championship and inaugural FedExCup honours on Sunday.
Three strokes ahead overnight, the world number one fired a four-under-par 66 at East Lake Golf Club for a tournament record total of 23-under 257.
After bogeying the par-three second, Woods rattled up six birdies and one more bogey to seal his 61st PGA Tour title and a $10 million bonus as the first FedExCup champion.
His playing partner and good friend Mark Calcavecchia closed with a 71 to share second place at 15 under with U.S. Masters champion Zach Johnson (68).

Can Someone Explain Why A Golfer Would Use Steroids?!?
June 25, 2007CONCORD, Mass. – Champions Tour president Rick George doesn’t think the over-50 golf circuit has a problem with performance-enhancing drugs. Even so, it will follow whatever steroid policy the PGA Tour comes up with.
“We’ll adopt whatever policies the PGA Tour does,” George said Monday during a midseason report on the state of the tour. “I certainly don’t (think it’s a problem). But I think if the tour adopts a policy, it’s important that the Champions Tour adopt the same policy.”
PGA commissioner Tim Finchem said last week his tour is getting closer to a policy banning performance-enhancing drugs, with testing likely to follow. The LPGA Tour and European Tour have announced plans to implement new policies in 2008.
With players as old as 78-year-old Arnold Palmer riding carts for 54-hole events, the Champions Tour might seem to be far removed from scandals that have rocked more youthful endeavors like cycling, track and field, and baseball.
“We do use a lot of Advil out here,” tour spokesman Michael McPhillips said.

CAT FIGHT?
June 7, 2007WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A row between the world’s two best known women golfers is raising the temperature for this week’s LPGA Championship, with Annika Sorenstam saying Michelle Wie lacked class in dealing with a wrist injury.
Former world number one Sorenstam took issue with a decision by teenager Wie to withdraw from a tournament last week when she was 14 over par, citing a wrist injury, only to practice two days later.
“I just feel there’s a little bit of a lack of respect and class just to leave a tournament like that and then come out and practice here,” Sorenstam told a news conference.

Wie was 16 holes into the opening round of last week’s tournament in North Carolina week when she pulled out, complaining of a wrist injury that had kept her from playing since January.
Two days later, the 17-year-old, who recently graduated from high school, was practicing at the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Maryland, the site of the LPGA Championship starting on Thursday.
Wie, who is not a member of the women’s tour and has played courtesy of sponsors’ exemptions, including in men’s events, refused to back down.
“I don’t think I need to apologize for anything,” she said. “I just have to take care of my body and mover forward and only think of positive things.”
Adding intrigue to her withdrawal was an LPGA rule that any non-member who shoots 88 or worse in a round is barred from the tour for the rest of the season. Wie was two bogeys away from that ignominious score.
“I don’t think about 88,” she said. “I mean, that’s just ridiculous.”
Wie’s troubles were compounded when her playing partners in a pro-am event on Monday at Bulle Rock lodged a complaint, prompting LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens to meet with Wie’s father, B.J., and agent, Greg Nared.
Although the nature of the dispute was unclear, Wie was adamant she had been cooperative with her playing partners.
“I think it was very insulting because I tried my best,” she said.
Wie, who earned close to $20 million in 2006 from endorsements, earnings and appearance money overseas, has struggled since tying for fifth place at last year’s LPGA Championship.
